How the calculation works

We add up your fixed monthly costs, the income you want to earn and taxes (the fixed MEI DAS or a percentage of revenue), and apply the margin. The total divided by billable hours gives the hourly rate.

Billable hours are the ones the client pays for. Prospecting, admin, travel and rework are left out. For most freelancers, this is somewhere between 50% and 70% of hours worked.

Frequently asked questions

Why not use 160 hours a month?

Because not every hour worked is sold. Calculating with 160 hours usually leads to a price that is too low.

How is the MEI tax included?

The MEI pays a fixed monthly DAS regardless of revenue. In the calculator it counts as a monthly cost.

What margin should I use?

The margin covers slow months, vacations and investment. Between 10% and 30% is a common starting point.
